Covina Sunrise Rotary was chartered on April 2, 1982 due exclusively to the inspiration of Barney Ingram, a long time member of the Covina Rotary Club. Since its inception, Covina Sunrise Rotarians separated themselves from the crowd with their enthusiasm, entrepreneurship, and committment to making a difference. Not unlike a fraternity / sorority that prides itself on fellowship, this club does more than most others of similar size to fight poverty, ignorance, and disease through its many charitable activities, not the least of which is Operation Santa Clothes.

Bootlegger’s Ball - Our New Fundraiser Party!
Covina Sunrise Rotary has amazed the community with its wildly successful WWII Victory Party for the past two years. But always looking for something to stay on top, we’ll be upping the ante with a new concept this year: The Bootlegger’s Ball! Still to be held at the A1 Event & Party Rentals building, this party will be themed in the 1920’s and 1930’s. Gangsters, Gun Molls, Bootleggers, and Flappers will be the order of the day as guests are asked to join in on the fun with period attire. The entertainment will include the fantastic “Big Band Theory” from JPL once again (www.BigBandTheory.com), but this time with a new music selections suited to the theme. All the great food, drink, games, and auctions will be there for the price of admission with a selection of new finer items to be auctioned off live. Get out your zoot suit or bob your curls and come join us for another fantastic celebration that will help fund Operation Santa Clothes and other projects from CSR. Click on the picture at left to see the full flyer.

Operation Santa Clothes: Over 20,000 Kids!
Operation Santa Clothes is one of the major projects undertaken by CSR every year to provide clothing and shoes for needy children at local elementary schools. This spring we accomplished a milestone: 21,417 kids have now been clothed at the Covina K-mart store. OSC began in 1994 serving 73 children from one Covina school. With a goal of clothing 2000 children per year, the project focuses not only on provided clothing, but given self esteem, character development, and a sense of caring to these kids. See our Santa Clothes page for more information. If you’d like to make a donation to this program, please CLICK HERE.

Meet the President:
Covina Sunrise Rotary’s latest in a legendary lineup of leadership is Wes Uptergrove, the 26th head of our executive branch. Wes has been a member for six years and has been a key player in working on every CSR project and furthering social activities in the Club. Coming into the Presidency after chairing the last WWII Victory Party in May ‘07, Wes can also claim title to being a multiple-time winner in the Covina Library Trivia Contest and co-winner in the Covina Rotary’s “Got Talent?” competition. Wes truly takes part in the “family” of Rotary due to the fact his wife, Shirley, is a member of the Covina Rotary Club. When not holding down his daytime gig at Reynold’s Buick or doing all the Presidential things he’s responsible for, he can be found around town on his new Harley or spending time managing his gnat collection.

WWII Victory Party - Success Again!
History was made once again by Covina Sunrise Rotary with the second annual World War II Victory Party on May 5, 2007. It was a stunning success and will be the talk of the town for many years. Those of you fortunate enough to have been there will be glad to know that we’re already planning another event for Spring 2008, the Bootlegger’s Ball! (See Above). The WWII event was designed from the beginning to be a Party that everyone would remember. On top of that, we raised many thousands of dollars for Operation Santa Clothes and our other charities. Over 500 guests had a fantastic time (and next time we’ll be adding even more restaurants). Make sure to attend this year’s fundraiser, Bootlegger’s Ball. We think it’ll be our best event yet.
More information and hundreds of photos taken at last year’s event are available on our Victory Party page. If you have comments about the Party or have photos you’d like to contribute, please visit our Contact Us page and drop us a note. We’d really appreciate hearing from you.

CSR Wins Trivia Contest THIRD Time!
The boys from Covina Sunrise Rotary really have a handle on the little things in life. A few years ago, Covina Sunrise Rotary took first place in the FIRST annual Trivia Contest put on by the Covina Library Association. Last year, they took the crown back. This year, our illustrious CSR Trivia Contest Team did the Three-peat! Terry Wysocki, Al Marino, and Wes Uptergrove brought home the gold, retaining the trophy once again for CSR! Working their way all the way to a sudden death playoff, the team delivered the final winning answer without hesitation. When asked where they were going next, the team replied “home, it’s pretty late.”

President Terry Assumes Power:
July 2006 was marked by the kickout of Owen King and the inauguration of Terry Wysocki as President of CSR. The ceremonial transfer of powers took place during frenzied festivities at the home of Al Marino. Attendees witnessed “Wyatt’s Wild West” regime replaced by the democratically elected Emperor with New Clothes. Owen kept his sidearms holstered and relinquished power with a sigh (of relief) as Terry the Great was carried in on his throne along a rose petaled path as the crowds cheered. The new Head of state cited this year’s Rotary theme of “Lead The Way” and promised a bright future for those that would blindly follow him. Owen gave up the office on the condition that the short toga would not be worn again.

The High Heels and Handcarts Auctions - A Legend!
On May 15, 2004 the Highheels and Handcarts Auction closed the big top tent for the last time. After 12 years of providing fine entertainment, food, drink, and exquisite collectibles, the Auction had provided CSR with the vehicle necessary for supporting its Operation Santa Clothes and the Tex Everson Humanitarian Endowment projects. However, all things must end eventually, and the Club is now moving on to other exciting ways to raise funds and benefit the community. Click here for photos of the last event or click on the Auction button above for more information and more photos.
